For the past three years, the AI industry has operated according to a simple premise: bigger is better.
Bigger models require bigger data centres, which require bigger investments in energy, land, water and infrastructure. The assumption has been that demand for AI would continue growing indefinitely, justifying almost any level of expansion.
But the first signs are emerging that the "growth at any cost" era may be coming to an end.
