Sustainability leaders voice concern over Exxon-backed carbon accounting initiative
"Fragmentation into parallel accounting systems would increase costs, reduce comparability and weaken investor confidence."
Sustainability leaders have expressed their concern about fragmentation in carbon accounting frameworks after the launch of an ExxonMobil-backed coalition questioning the accuracy of the GHG Protocol.
In a joint statement published this week, eight prominent voices in the sustainability industry – including former Unilever CEO Paul Polman, CERES CEO Mindy Lubber and We Mean Business Coalition CEO María Mendiluce – urge policymakers to strengthen and evolve existing global frameworks, including the GHG Protocol and ISO standards, rather than “fragment carbon accounting into parallel approaches that risk slowing the transition to net zero”.
