Sustainable Markets Initiative unveils plan to create marine protected area in Antarctica
“The real question is whether industry chooses to engage constructively, and be part of the solution, or remain on the sidelines."
The Sustainable Markets Initiative has launched a plan to establish one of the world’s largest marine protected areas in Antarctica, leveraging the entry into force of the High Seas Treaty.
The marine protected area (MPA) would be the first project under the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s newly launched Ocean Stewardship Initiative – which seeks to mobilise private sector engagement in support of effective ocean governance, including marine protection and science-based fisheries management.
