UN climate chief tells Europe war-driven energy crisis is another ‘abject lesson’ on fossil fuel dependency

Europe should learn the ‘abject lesson’ that fossil fuel dependency is a risk to national security and sovereignty and prioritise renewables, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell will tell EU leaders today.

Europe’s reliance on fossil fuel imports cost it over €420 billion in 2024 alone, Stiell warns, and recent weeks, marked by an escalating US and Israel-led conflict in Iran and surrounding countries are set to result in another hefty bill.
