Is it realistic to hope that the world’s accelerating, AI-fuelled data centre expansion can be met without harming the environment or local communities? For Janne Sigurdsson, Chief Sustainability and Compliance Officer at Nordic data centre provider atNorth, the answer is a resounding “yes” – but it won’t be easy.
Sigurdsson, who is atNorth’s first CSO and part of its executive leadership team, truly believes AI and digitisation don’t have to jeopardise climate and sustainability goals. “But it does not come for free,” she adds. “It takes a lot of collaboration. It takes a lot of investment, and I’m not only talking about money, I’m talking about time and focus, and it takes innovation.”
