Microsoft achieves 100% renewable energy – without RECs
"The future of carbon-free energy is one that we will create – together.”
Microsoft has achieved a goal to match 100% of its annual global electricity consumption with renewable energy – without using spot-market renewable energy certificates (RECs).
The tech giant met its target by using a mix of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs, 90%) and what it calls “grid mix” renewable energy supported via standard utility contracts. Microsoft’s definition of renewable energy includes geothermal, wind solar, hydro and biomass energy.
