Microsoft reportedly pauses carbon removal purchases: Concerns over the future of CDR market
Microsoft accounted for 90% of all CDR purchase volumes in 2025.
Microsoft – which represented 90% of all carbon dioxide removal purchases last year – has reportedly paused its programme, creating concerns over the future of the CDR market.
Microsoft’s decision to pause carbon removal credit purchases, after entering contracts to remove no less than 45 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere as of 2025, was first reported in Heatmap over the weekend. It has since been confirmed by other outlets, though Microsoft is yet to comment on the story.
