Nobina hires Jenny Karlsson as Head of Sustainability

Nobina, the Nordic region’s largest public transportation company, has appointed Jenny Karlsson in the newly created role of Head of Sustainability as it prepares to “step up” its sustainability work.

The company, which posted net sales of more than €1 billion in 2022, is converting its fleet to electric vehicles and renewable fuels with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre by 50% by 2030/31 across all scopes, from a 2019/20 base year – a target that was approved by the SBTi last year.

(In 2022/23, carbon intensity stood at 641g of CO2 per passenger kilometre – down 5.6% from its baseline of 679g.)

In addition to its carbon intensity target, Nobina is working to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by half by 2030.

This work was previously led by Sustainability Manager Helena Nisser, but the role has now been elevated to Head of Sustainability and given to Karlsson, who joins from rail company Asltom. There, she was CSR and Sustainability Manager for the Nordics, based in Stockholm.

Nobina CEO Henrik Dagnäs said: “Sustainability is a key element in everything Nobina does as well as the foundation of Nobina's business model. But we are not satisfied with this, we have high ambitions to develop our sustainability work and take a leading position on the market. With Jenny on board and her solid experience, we are ready to step up our sustainability work.”

Karlsson started her career as an engineer at truck manufacturer Scania, before taking sustainability roles within the group. Overall, she spent more than 18 years at Scania – which recently made sustainability headlines by announcing its intention to source only green steel from its main provider SSAB from 2030.

"It feels both interesting and exciting to become part of the Nobina team and now have the opportunity to drive the company's sustainability work with increased focus. It is clear that sustainability is a natural part of Nobina and for me it is important to continue to concretise the work so that it becomes a natural part of the daily operations”, she said.
