Since John Ostergren joined global engineering company Smiths Group as Chief Sustainability Officer two years ago, the firm has published its first sustainability framework, submitted climate targets for SBTi approval and reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by almost 12%. 

During this period the company also experienced double-digit revenue growth – suggesting that the company has got its sustainability and business priorities aligned. “The primary focus of my work is in value creation,” Ostergren tells CSO Futures, noting that a large part of this agenda revolves around “commercialising high-value green technology”.
