As many sustainability leaders know, setting targets is the easy part. But sometimes, it is much harder to know when a target has outlived its usefulness.

That challenge confronted Anna Pierce, Director of Sustainability at Tate & Lyle, as the global ingredients company completed a sweeping review of its environmental programmes following the acquisition of CP Kelco in late 2024.

The review produced an unexpected conclusion. Tate & Lyle's existing water target, while successful in driving reductions across the business, was no longer directing resources where they could deliver the greatest impact.
