All electricity demand growth in 2025 was met by renewable energy sources, marking a turning point in the world’s power mix.

Solar alone met three quarters of the increase in electricity demand thanks to a 30% increase in output, to 636 terawatt hours (TWh), according to Ember’s Global Electricity Review 2026. This was the fastest growth in eight years, and was largely driven by China which accounted for more than half of the increase in both solar capacity and generation last year.
