Carbon market hit US$1bn in 2025 – with higher prices offsetting lower volumes
"Forward markets show buyers are already pricing future supply very differently."
The value of the global carbon market reached US$1.04 billion in 2025 – the first time it hits the billion-dollar threshold since its 2022 peak – as higher credit prices offset a drop in volume.
About 168 million carbon credits were retired last year, down 4.5% from the previous year. However, market value is up 6% thanks to higher prices driven by forward contracts and the compliance market.
