TAFF: First conference to transition away from fossil fuels starts amidst war-driven oil volatility
Representatives from around 50 countries are gathered in Santa Marta, Colombia, over the next few days for the first Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels (TAFF), an unprecedented diplomatic forum aimed at turning the broad commitment made at COP28 to “transition away” from fossil fuels into a practical international roadmap.
Co-hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands, the conference is framed by organisers as the first in a series of diplomatic summits intended to build momentum toward formal negotiations on a Fossil Fuel Treaty. Unlike UN climate talks, which organisers argue have often been slowed by consensus rules and oil state resistance, TAFF is designed as a “solutions-focused forum” centred on policy pathways, finance mechanisms and international cooperation for a managed phaseout of coal, oil and gas.
