After reaching record levels in 2024, tropical forest loss decreased by 36% last year, but experts worry the growing frequency of wildfires may reverse this trend.

The reduction in deforestation in 2025 is an encouraging sign that strong policies and enforcement are effective tools against tropical forest loss. Brazil led the global drop as President Lula Da Silva implemented stronger forest control, relaunched a federal anti-deforestation plan and increased penalties for environmental crimes.
