Yinson’s Renard Siew on the delicate balance between energy security and the energy transition
“We shouldn’t just close a blind eye and say ‘let’s fire up our coal plants'.”
For Renard Siew, Global Head of Corporate Sustainability at Malaysian energy infrastructure and services company Yinson, the debate over energy security versus energy transition presents a false choice.
“Energy security and transition is something that needs to go hand in hand,” he tells CSO Futures, while acknowledging that each country is faced with different dilemmas and trade-offs. At a moment when geopolitical tensions, supply shocks and rising electricity demand are prompting some governments to reconsider coal and other fossil fuels, Siew argues the current crisis should accelerate – not derail – the transition to cleaner energy.
